Chad Finch and his wife, Max, own “Hidden Oasis,” a bed and breakfast in Dragoon, AZ. In late 2023, Chad purchased more of the “Silox Adobe and Rammed Earth Water Repellent” to treat their mud adobe home, having initially bought some five years ago.
Chad is a passionate advocate for Silox, praising its effectiveness on his adobe home. When he visited my business to pick up the additional Silox, I asked if he would share his story, to which he eagerly agreed.
Years earlier, in 2018, when Chad purchased his first initial batch of the Silox, I did a phone interview with Chad where he told of this initial experience:
Rarely do we hear about a product’s performance five years after its initial use by a customer. While many products claim greatness, as the old saying goes, “the proof is in the pudding.” A significant measure of a product’s excellence is the long-term satisfaction of its customers. Chad’s continued use of Silox demonstrates its effectiveness on his mud adobe home.
One striking aspect of Chad’s story was his revelation: “We were losing at least 200 pounds of grit a year.” It’s remarkable to lose such a significant amount of “home equity” annually due to adobe particles shedding from the walls. The Silox Adobe and Rammed Earth Water Repellent offers a solution with its acrylic binder, which stabilizes the walls and mitigates these shedding issues.
Many people do not realize this is a problem with sun dried mud adobe and rammed earth walls: they shed, meaning, the small grains of sand and grit from the walls delaminate from the surface and fall to the floor. This condition can become problematic on the interior of the home if this “adobe dust” falls onto expensive hardwood flooring or other delicate flooring that could be damaged by being ground underfoot or by sweeping or mopping the floor. The Silox will bind up these loose particles of the adobe or rammed earth and solve 95% of this vexing issue.
