Improved product! We have enhanced our flagship formula, allowing increased hydrophobic properties to both adobe and rammed earth.
Online store for the sale of the “Silox Adobe and Rammed Earth Water Repellents” is temporarily closed to new customers. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Click here to learn why.
We now offer an upgraded and improved version of our successful, tried and proven formula, called SILOX Xtra ($189.00 per five gallon bucket). Our flagship SILOX Original product is the Cadillac of adobe and rammed earth water repellents, but as our knowledge of silicones increases, we are on the lookout to improve the SILOX line of earthen protective coatings.
All invoicing and payments are only done through PayPal; this way, I don’t see your credit card information and all your personal, private identifiers are kept safe and confidential.
We consider the new and improved product, SILOX Xtra, to be an upgrade from a “Cadillac” to a “Mercedes Benz” or a “BMW.” What we have done in this improved formulation is added an additional expensive silicone emulsion to the formulation; thus, the SILOX Xtra has not one but two silicones as part of its unique formulation.
The SILOX Original will protect your adobe and rammed earth from between three and five years; the SILOX Xtra is expected to protect your adobe and rammed earth home for up to eight years and longer, thus the increase in price.
Early testing reveals that this added silicone emulsion has excellent and dramatic results on asphalt stabilized mud adobe, with the hydrophobic qualities of this new silicone emulsion magnifying the protective ability of the SILOX Xtra to repel water from this particular earthen building material.
The picture above was taken on Dec. 12, 2019 in Tucson, after a heavy rain two days ago. The temperature when the photo was taken was 55 degrees F. with a humidity index of 50%. This asphalt stabilized mud adobe was treated—the right half— with the SILOX Xtra months ago and has been sitting outside on a table underneath a mesquite tree ever since, completely exposed to the elements.
Note the darkened area of this adobe on the left half; it remains wet two days later while the right half remains dry. This is significant because, unlike the hot summer months in the desert where this adobe would have probably thoroughly dried within a couple of hours or less, it is still wet two days after the heavy rainfall.
If your home or surrounding perimeter walls have been constructed with raw, untreated asphalt or cement stabilized mud adobe, or constructed from rammed earth, you can expect your unprotected adobes or rammed earth to look the same after a drenching December rainstorm with chilly temperatures.
But the adobe treated with the SILOX Xtra, as revealed in the photo above, has been dramatically protected and shows no sign of moisture penetration on the treated, right side. Not only this, but rubbing your finger over the treated side does not remove or “lift off” any adobe sand grains or particles like what happens when you rub your fingers across the left side.
Strict adherence to application and square foot coverage guidelines are crucial to the success of all of our SILOX family of quality and specialized water repellents. The SILOX Xtra will have the same coverage rates and application techniques as the SILOX Original: 80 s.f. per gallon (400 s.f. per five gallon pail) for burnt adobe and 50 s.f. per gallon (250 s.f. per five gallon pail) for asphalt stabilized, cement stabilized, all sun-dried adobe and rammed earth.
